OC Restaurant Quest: Empress Gardens in Southfield

Southfield, MI – Inside a cute little mall at 11 Mile Lasher is a small Chinese restaurant called Empress Gardens.

There are rows of booths inside, plus a carryout counter that accommodates walk-ins and online orders.

I recently ordered the lunch combination of Sesame Chicken, fried rice, and an egg roll. The sesame chicken had plenty of golden batter and was topped with a sweet red sauce, then sprinkled with sesame seeds. The sauce was delicious when stirred into the rice which comes alone without vegetables, which may be a selling point for picky eaters.

The egg roll was full of veggies, as well as hearty bites of shrimp inside a crispy fried wrap.

There are several classic Chinese items on the Empress Garden menu, including a variety of friend rice dishes, chop suey, and chow mein. Other interesting choices include Shrimp with Black Bean Sauce, Szechuan Crispy Squid, Fried Dumplings, Egg Fu Young, and Ginger Chicken.
