Downtown Ferndale Seeking Artists and Interested Businesses for Mural Program

(Downtown Ferndale, Feb. 14, 2023)

Ferndale, MI – The Ferndale Downtown Development Authority (DDA) is proud to announce the launch of the annual Downtown Mural Program, which aims to enhance the city’s character and personality through the creation of outdoor murals. This year’s theme, “You Belong Here,” highlights the importance of inclusivity and diversity, with a focus on welcoming artists of all backgrounds and skill levels.

“Fostering a legacy of art can create a sense of belonging and identity. We are thrilled to support the creation of outdoor murals that celebrate the unique spirit of Downtown Ferndale and bring our community together,” says DDA Engagement Manager Sommer Realy who manages the program.

The 2023 program is partially funded by the Michigan Arts & Cultural Council Commission and Main Street Oakland County. Artists and property owners are encouraged to collaborate in bringing public art to the city, but the selection committee can also play matchmaker between inspiring artists and property owners who want to feature a public mural in Downtown Ferndale.

Applications are accepted in the first quarter of each year, with murals set to be complete by August. Don’t miss your chance to be a part of this exciting program and help bring the community of Ferndale to life!

Artists are encouraged to submit a concept proposal based on the theme “You Belong Here.”

Belonging in Downtown Ferndale can mean different things to different people. We encourage artists to search for inspiration in the theme in whatever way it speaks to them.

Property owners along with business owners are requested to submit their interest in obtaining a public art mural on the exterior of location that meets the criteria of the program. The location must be within the DDA District, with strong preference given to the TIF District boundary of the Ferndale DDA – MAP HERE.

All submissions will be reviewed and scored by the Downtown Ferndale Mural Program Advisory Committee. The committee includes representatives from the DDA, City of Ferndale, and the Ferndale Arts and Cultural Commission. The number of murals funded each year will vary based on budget availability, and the size/scope of the proposals received. The requirements and scoring criteria are listed on the program website, and staff are available to ask all questions.
