10 Nonprofits Awarded Healthy Food Access Grants

(Pontiac Community Foundation, Dec. 10, 2022)

Oakland County, MI – In the fall of 2022, Pontiac Community Foundation, in partnership with Oakland County, established the county’s Healthy Food Access Grant Program. Recipients from across Oakland County were awarded one-time operational and programmatic grants to help provide critical food assistance to residents and communities in Oakland County just in time for the holidays.

“The Pontiac Community Foundation knows the organizations in Oakland County that stepped up during the pandemic to help residents in need,” said Oakland County Executive Dave Coulter. “We knew they would be a perfect partner to get these desperately needed emergency food resources to the groups that are hard at work on the ground, several of which didn’t traditionally provide food assistance before the pandemic and stepped up to fill that basic necessity.”

Pontiac Community Foundation announced the 10 nonprofits that will receive Health Food Access Grants. Those nonprofits are Affirmations LGBTQ+ Community Center, Baldwin House, Catholic Charities of Southeast Michigan, Chaldean American Ladies Charity, Hospitality House, Jewish Family Services of Metro Detroit, Metro Food Rescue, Micah 6 Community, and Neighborhood House.

“What we quickly realized as we received applications is that many nonprofits began providing food to their community over the past couple of years as food shortages and inflation began to take a toll on our most vulnerable populations,” said Dustin McClellan, Founder/CEO of Pontiac Community Foundation. “Access to healthy food is an essential need that every individual deserves. This grant allowed us to hear their stories, see their needs, and support them as they make a very real impact on the lives of our neighbors every day. ”

Accessing healthy food is a real issue, with the cost of fresh food items high – and inaccessible to many families. The Healthy Food Access Grant is provided by Oakland County and administered through Pontiac Community Foundation. A total of $300,000 was distributed through Pontiac Community Foundation.
