Vittoria, Ontario – If you are a photographer that loves raptors and owls, and always wished you could get closer to them for phenomenal pictures, then look no further.

Just a few hours across the Blue Water Bridge is a magical place called the Canadian Raptor Conservancy.

Run by husband and wife, James and Shauna, they have over a dozen birds that are trained for photography sessions. The birds that are available for each session change by the season and comfort level of the birds.

You might have a chance to see a Bald Eagle, Red-Tailed Hawk, Harris Hawk, Gyrfalcon, Great Horned Owl, Eurasian Eagle Owl, Snowy Owl, Screech Owls, and more!

Some of the birds are static, meaning they will place them on a prop for you to photograph, typically within 20 feet. Other birds are trained to fly from post to post for food so that you have the opportunity to capture birds in flight.

Each session lasts about 2 hours and costs between $50-85 USD.

You can find the upcoming schedule on their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/BirdnerdCRC

Sessions fill up fast, and they do keep a cancellation list. I highly recommend it for a day trip regardless of your photographic skill level. James is always conscious to try to put the birds in the best light to be photographed and is happy to share which settings should work.

In addition to the photography sessions, they also do captive breeding, bird rehabilitation, research and consulting, educational programs, and offer their animals for TV and movie uses. Their website says “Through entertaining and informative live shows, we ignite the imaginations of spectators and engage students to find an interest in the magnificence of birds, and the wonders of nature.”
