Lake Orion, MI – Downtown Lake Orion kicked off the holiday season with the Sing and Stroll event on Nov. 17, which included the ceremonial lighting of the Christmas Tree in the gazebo of Children’s Park.  The event had dancing and singing by local school groups, plus cheer by Diamond Cheer Dance Team.  Orion Township Library shared a kids’ story on the big screen and there were Girl Scouts on hand giving away cookies.  Santa and Mrs. Claus were there to pose for pictures, and Business Person of the Year Wayne Haney helped the jolly couple light the tree.

Among the vendors was Roseann Nieman of the Biscotti Shop, who makes delicious cookies out of her home in Clarkston.  She was inspired by a trip to Italy, desiring to bring the quality she enjoyed there back to the states.  She had fun giving away samples and making sales at the event.

Another blossoming small business is Once Upon a Sparkling Pig, a crafting enterprise started by Jessica Lynn and named after her pet pig Olivia.  Lynn sells her ornaments, barrettes, jewelry and other items at Canterbury Village, and was excited to have a booth at Sing and Stroll.  “It’s my first event,” she said.  “It’s nice meeting people and connecting with the community.”

She also enjoyed being able to have her family with her, both to help with making items and to help with the booth.  “The kids help in their own ways,” she said.  “And we get to do this as a family.”

The event, hosted by the Downtown Development Authority, also encouraged visitors to stroll through the downtown – and even offered horse-drawn carriage ridges for guests.  Sing and Stroll is just the start of holidays in Downtown Lake Orion, as the community prepares for the lighted parade on Dec. 3.
