Prevention Pontiac Program to Increase Access to Substance Abuse Resources

Pontiac, MI – With the vision of creating a healthier city, Pontiac Community Foundation – in partnership with the Alliance of Coalitions for Healthy Communities — is excited to announce the launch of Prevention Pontiac – an initiative aimed at helping people access comprehensive substance use prevention education, treatment and recovery resources – quickly, easily and without judgment.
Prevention Pontiac,will connect, strengthen and mobilize strategic partners to create a healthier city. This coalition will promote substance abuse prevention strategies, as well as foster increased public health and safety through advocacy, education and community collaboration.
“We are excited to announce this initiative and work towards a community that is healthier and safer for residents,” said Pontiac Community Foundation CEO Dustin McClellan. “We all know that substance abuse is a real problem, not only in Pontiac, but in our country as a whole. Prevention Pontiac is a tangible way to work toward a solution.”
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), about 53 million Americans over the age of 12 used an illegal drug last year. And 11.7 percent of Americans over the age of 12 are regular users of illegal drugs. About 70 percent of Americans who try drugs before age 13 will develop an addiction within seven years.
The need for programs like Prevention Pontiac is urgent, and PCF aims to provide programs in coordination with the Pontiac School District, youth-focused organizations and other community partners.
