Hazel Park Council Passes Resolution on Entheogenic Plants and Fungi, aka Magic Mushrooms

Hazel Park, MI – Hazel Park has taken another step in welcoming entheogenic plans and fungi to the community, by declaring September as Entheogenic Plant and Fungi Awareness Month. This includes This includes “magic mushrooms” that contain psilocybin and psilocin which produce psychedelic effects.

The resolution was approved unanimously at the Sept. 13 City Council Meeting, stating that “the use of entheogenic plants/fungi has been shown in scientific and clinical studies, as well as traditional practices, to be beneficial to the health and well-being of individuals and communities” in addressing conditions like “substance abuse, addiction, recidivism, trauma, post-traumatic stress symptoms, chronic depression, severe anxiety, end of life anxiety, and cluster headaches.”

The resolution also notes that “practices with entheogenic plants/fungi have been considered sacred to some human cultures and human relationships with nature for thousands of years.” Hazel Park adopted a resolution on March 22, 2022 making “the investigation and arrest of persons planting, cultivating, purchasing, transporting, distributing, engaging in practices with, or possessing entheogenic plants the lowest law enforcement priority.”

The resolution concludes by saying “the City of Hazel Park does hereby call upon individuals and organizations to commit to increasing awareness and understanding for the potential benefits of entheogins for mental health, personal and spiritual growth, as well as honoring longstanding ancestral practices and relationships with entheogens.”

“While decriminalizing entheogenics in Hazel Park was a significant victory, continuing to drive awareness is the only path toward additional policy changes as well as normalizing these natural substances that have been taken by millions of people over thousands of years,” said Hazel Park City Councilmember Luke Londo. “Psilocybin has been remarkable for my mental health, and I have a responsibility as a proponent and an elected official to help expand access to entheogenic medicine, and afford others the same opportunity to benefit from it.”
