Sheriff Gives Updates on Walled Lake Shootings

(OCSO, Sept. 12, 2022)

Walled Lake, MI – Oakland County Sheriff’s Detectives are continuing their investigation into Sunday’s shooting in Walled Lake. As part of this ongoing investigation, they are seeking insight into what set this into motion leading to a resident fatally shoot his wife, shooting and seriously injuring his daughter and killing the family dog.

Autopsies were performed today on Igor Lanis, 53, and his wife, age 56. Preliminary results indicate they both died from gunshot wounds although official results are pending.

Sheriff’s Detectives from the Special Investigations Unit are working the case. Detectives retrieved the cell phone and other electronic devices belonging to Lanis to see if they help determine a possible motive.

“This is an unbelievably horrific act,” Sheriff Michael Bouchard said. “It is so sad on so many levels but due to the response and professionalism of our dispatch, the Walled Lake officers and Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Deputies at least one victim was saved. We will actively pursue information to gain insight into what set this into motion.”

Deputies and Walled Lake police were dispatched to the residence on Glenwood Drive approximately 4:11 a.m. Sunday. The caller, later identified as the daughter of Lanis and his wife, told dispatchers her father had just shot her. Although she was unable to provide other information including an address for the home, Sheriff’s dispatch was able to triangulate the area of the call and Deputies and police arrived within five minutes of the call.

As they were on foot in the area, Deputies heard a gunshot and approached the house. Lanis exited from the front door and fired at officers with a Remington 870 shotgun, striking a car an officer was behind and the residence behind him. No one was injured from those shots.

A Walled Lake Officer and a Sheriff’s Deputy returned fire, fatally wounding Lanis.

Deputies discovered the 911 caller and daughter, age 25, trying to crawl from the home. She was dragged to safety, telling her rescuers her father had shot her and her mother.

The mother’s body was found during a search of the home. She had been shot multiple times in the back and it appeared she was trying to flee out the front door.

The daughter remains hospitalized today. She was initially listed in critical condition but was upgraded to stable condition after surgery. The family dog, believed to be a Great Pyrenees, was shot multiple times and was killed.
