Clawson Firefighters Stop Garage Fire From Spreading to Home

Clawson, MI- On Saturday morning at 0115 hrs, the Clawson Fire Department was dispatched to the 300 block of South Batchewana for a 
structure fire. The residents were awoken by a fire in their attached garage. The residents immediately exited the structure and called 911. E16-3 was the first arriving unit and reported a working fire with black smoke coming from the attached garage. E16-4 arrived simultaneously and secured a water source from a nearby fire hydrant for E16-3. Crews immediately deployed a preconnected handline from E16-3 and entered the structure from the breezeway between the house and garage to fight the fire from the unburned side. The quick fire attack knocked down the bulk of the fire and stopped the spread into the home.

The quick fire attack knocked down the bulk of the fire and stopped the spread into the home.While the fire attack was happening, a second crew entered the home through the front door to complete a primary search of the residence. While all occupants were out of the building, the residents reported their cat was still inside. The search team was met with very low visibility due to smoke filling the home, but they were successfully able to locate the cat and remove it from the building still in good health.
Once the majority of the fire in the garage was knocked down, the exterior garage doors were removed. Extensive overhaul was performed, and crews remained on scene for approximately three hours putting out hot spots and confirming there was no extension into the home. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Operating on scene were E16-3, E16-4, R16-5, and L16-6.
Less than 9 hours after clearing the structure fire, the Clawson Fire Department was dispatched Saturday at 1320 hrs to a transformer fire behind the Post Office. A large, dark black column of smoke could be seen for blocks away. Thankfully, the pole fell away from the building and only the transformers and grass burned. Once it was confirmed there was no electricity going to the transformers, the fire was safely extinguished. Operating on scene were E16-3, E16-4, and R16-5.
Just after the transformer fire was extinguished, the Clawson Fire Department was dispatched to 255 W. 14 Mile for an elevator rescue. E16-4 and R16-5 were able to leave the transformer fire with E16-3 and responded to safely remove the occupants from the elevator.
It was a busy weekend, and while unfortunately there was property damage, we are glad no one was injured. We are proud of our firefighter’s hard work, and we are all proud to serve the citizens and City of Clawson.
