SEMCOG Announces Transportation Improvement Grants, Including Oakland County
(SEMCOG, Aug. 14, 2022)
At its July 28, 2022 meeting, the Executive Committee of SEMCOG, the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments voted to adopt the 2023-2026 Transportation Improvement Program (TIP), which will invest over $4.2 billion to maintain and enhance the region’s transportation system.
The projects within the TIP were submitted by the Michigan Department of Transportation, Southeast Michigan’s eight Federal-Aid Committees (representing the seven counties plus the City of Detroit), and Public Transit Agencies. Among the Oakland County Projects are work to be done on sections of John R, Novi Road, Orchard Lake Road, Walton, 13 Mile, M-59, Pontiac Trail, Telegraph and more. “Southeast Michigan’s transportation system supports quality of life and access to opportunity for the 4.8 million people who live in Southeast Michigan,” said Chris Barnett, SEMCOG Chairperson and Orion Township Supervisor. “Our ability to methodically, collaboratively, and strategically plan all this investment throughout the region is a credit to the countless public servants who work to ensure that the right investments are made at the right time to maximize their impact,” said Barnett. |

“There are a number of valid and competing priorities when deciding which projects to prioritize and move forward,” said Lev Wood, Chairperson of SEMCOG’s Transportation Coordinating Council and Grosse Pointe Farms Councilmember. “When you consider that funding resources remain limited even after recent state and federal increases, it is a very big deal that local officials from throughout our region can come together to agree on a list of projects that meet both local and regional priorities,” said Wood. |

“Transportation investments are, of course, extremely significant because of how they enhance mobility for people in Southeast Michigan,” said Amy O’Leary, Executive Director of SEMCOG. “However, the transportation system also shares space with a number of other infrastructure systems. This is why we take all the project data from the TIP and add it to our capitol improvement projects database, ensuring that project coordination can be maximized and while inconvenience and costs can be minimized,” said O’Leary.
