Petitioners Meet Deadline for Proposals on Voting Rights, Abortion Access
(Michigan Townships Association, July 19, 2022)
Lansing, MI – Two organizations met the July 11 deadline to submit signatures to place a constitutional amendment on the November ballot.
Promote the Vote (which sponsored Proposal 3 in 2018) turned in signatures for a ballot proposal that would establish a “fundamental right to vote.” The proposal would create an early voting period, enshrine in the state Constitution allowing voters to sign an affidavit in lieu of showing ID, and require state-funded pre-paid postage for absentee ballots applications and ballots among other things.
Reproductive Freedom for All submitted signatures to place a question on the ballot that would legalize the right to abortion and other reproductive care.
Both measures now undergo signature checks by the state Bureau of Elections and then approval from the State Board of Canvassers. If approved, they would join two other potential issues on the November ballot—a proposal to revise legislative term limits and a proposal that would set new standards and regulations for “payday” lenders. The latter is also awaiting State Board of Canvasser approval.
