Reporter Food: Culantro in Downtown Ferndale
(Crystal A. Proxmire, June 18, 2022)
Ferndale, MI – A friend and I recently enjoyed lunch at Culantro, a fabulous Peruvian restaurant in Downtown Ferndale. We started by sharing a slice of Dule De Leche Cake, which is topped with caramel sauce (because life is short and I like dessert first).
For the main course, they had the Culantro Bowl, filled with rice, chicken, black beans, Peruvian white corn, tomatoes, peppers, cilantro and lime juice and zesty Aji Verde sauce.
I had the Carne a la Plancha which is grilled steak topped with a fried egg served with rice, fries, fried banana plantains, and chimichuri sauce. This was such a perfect meal, with the way the egg mixed in with the rice and the oily sauce, and the way the steak was perfectly tender.
Now I’m torn between this and my normal go-to favorite the Aji de Gallina which is shredded chicken over potatoes in a yellow cream sauce from Amarillo peppers and walnuts, topped with a hard-boiled egg and served with white rice.
Other tempting choices include Seco a la Nortena, Pataccones Picantes, Vegan Lomo Saltado, and Arroz Mariscos (all with full descriptions on their website). Another interesting choice is Salchipapas, which are thinly sliced, pan-fried beef hotdogs and French fries mixed together served with Chipotle sauce. Other dessert choices include Tres Leches cake, Flan, Mouse de Maracuya (passion fruit gelatin) and more.
Culantro is located at 22939 Woodward Ave in Downtown Ferndale. Find the full menu at https://www.culantroperu.com/.
