$5000 Donation from Local Cleaners to Help with Building Inclusive Playground in Berkley
(City of Berkley, June 3, 2022)
Berkley, MI – Berkley Parks & Recreation has received a donation in
the amount of $5,000 for their inclusive park fundraiser from Wayne Wudyka, owner of
Huntington Cleaners, Wesch Cleaners, and Certified Restoration Drycleaning Network
(CRDN).
Jaycee Park, a 2.7–acre park located between Bacon and Phillips, serves not only
Berkley residents, but it is a short distance from the city of Royal Oak, along with other
neighboring cities, including Southfield, Oak Park, Beverly Hills, and Huntington Woods,
all less than five minutes away.
“With the support of long–time business members like Wayne Wudyka, we will continue
to have the ability to build parks that are vibrant and significant location spaces for more
community enjoyment, socialization, healthy activities, and imaginative fun,” said
Theresa McArleton, Parks & Recreation Director.
This premier recreation spot is set to become an all–inclusive playground and playscape
that will go above the required ADA accessibility requirements to meet a variety of
needs and interests. The space will be sensory–rich and enable children to develop
physically, socially, and emotionally. It will also allow adults of varying ages and abilities
to actively engage with children in their care. The project includes updates to pathways,
increased accessibility, and a state–of–the–art, universally accessible playscape.
“Berkley is a destination city for families, and that’s largely due to the forward–thinking
efforts by our mayor, city council, and standing boards, commissions, and advisory
committees to foster an inclusive, community–focused environment that citizens of all
ages can enjoy. The upgrades planned for our town’s Jaycee Park are a wonderful step
toward cementing these ideals for the future,” added Wudyka.
Thanks to donations like this, the City was able to exceed its crowdfunding goal of
$50,000 and will win a matching grant with funds made possible by the Michigan
Economic Development Corporation’s (MEDC) Public Spaces Community Places
program.
Public Spaces Community Places is a collaborative effort of the MEDC, the Michigan
Municipal League, and Patronicity, in which local residents can use crowdfunding to be
part of the development of strategic projects in their communities and be backed with a
matching grant from MEDC.
