Reporter Food: Mezcal Ferndale
(Crystal A. Proxmire, May 16, 2022)
Ferndale, MI – Recently opened in Downtown Ferndale, Mezcal brings creative Mexican-inspired dishes to East Nine Mile.
There are familiar items on the menu, including a nice selection of tacos, quesadillas, and burritos. Plus some interesting surprises.
I tried the Mezcal burrito, since it was named after the place. This hearty burrito was made with short rib steak, rice, refried beans, cheese, guacamole, and pineapple habernaro sauce. It was a boldly flavored twist on a south of the border tradition.
I also just craved a basic crispy taco – ground beef, shredded cheese, lettuce, tomato, and sour cream. Other taco choices include fish tacos, veggie tacos, and the campechano taco made with chorizo and asada meat with cilantro.
Mezcal also has Tres Leches cake, but it’s on the menu as three milk cake, so named for the creamy milk that soaks into the sweet vanilla cake. Mezcal also offers flan and churros.
The name Mezcal is explained on one of the walls, with a painted definition: “A distilled alcoholic beverage made from roasted saps of various maguey plants that give a unique smokey taste.”
Also on the wall are bright and colorful murals, including men in masks by sports cars and a winged wildcat with spots and stripes and fur with many colors and patterns.
Mezcal is located at 201 E 9 Mile Rd. Check them out online at https://mezcalferndale.com/
