Explore:  Bald Mountain Recreation Area’s Hart Lake Loop

(Crystal A, Proxmire, May 9, 2022)

Oakland Township, MI – The Bald Mountain State Recreation Area is 4,637 acres of nature and trails in NW Oakland County including Addison, Oakland, and Orion Townships. For this hike I focused on the Hart Lake loop at Harmon Road and Predmore Road. This is part of the North Trails, specifically the white and blue loops.  The orange loop connects in also, but we’ll save that for a different day.

The white and blue combined gave me about four miles of a nice, muddy, early springtime hike.  The Clinton River Area Bike Association has the best map for those looking to visit.  It even includes the “old foundation” which has become a canvas, though it’s easy to miss if you’re not paying attention.

It’s a simple trail to follow and on the weekends it’s packed with people, so it could be a good spot for those just starting out or looking to make friends.  I picked a quiet weekday but still ran into a few others hikers.  The trail also has a cabin that is available to rent, and outhouses near the cabin.  For information and reservations visit The Michigan DNR website.
