North Holly Road Construction Project Wins APWA Award
(RCOC, April 10, 2022)
The 2020/2021 North Holly Road resurfacing project, from north of Grange Hall Road north to the Genesee County border, a partnership of the Road Commission for Oakland County, Holly Township and the Village of Holly, has been recognized by the American Public Works Association (APWA), Detroit Metro Branch.
The APWA chapter named the road project the 2021 Project of the Year in the $1 million to $5 million category. The award was presented March 10.
The $4.3 million project involved resurfacing the 4.5-mile road segment as well as safety enhancements including improved sight distance, guardrail installation and high-friction pavement treatment at significant curves. Additionally, the project included reconstruction of a retaining wall at the intersection with Belford Road, raising the elevation of the road in three locations to improve drainage and the maintenance of a culvert under the road.
Among other things, the project provided improved access to the Great Lakes National Cemetery on Belford Road, one of only two national cemeteries in Michigan.
“This project was a great partnership between the Road Commission, Holly Township and Village of Holly,” stated RCOC Managing Director Dennis Kolar. “This is a great example of the community coming together to make a significant improvement that benefits all parties.”
The project was funded in part with a special federal Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grant, with the remainder shared by RCOC and Holly Township. The project was designed by consulting engineers HRC.
