Picking Up Trash Part of Pack 291’s Visit to Orion’s Camp Agawam

Orion Township, MI – Joined by a trio of dads, kids from Cub Scout Pack 291 from Paint Creek Elementary in Lake Orion enjoyed the recent change to warm weather by going out and cleaning up a park in their neighborhood. Orion Township’s Camp Agawam is a favorite spot of the kids, who come regularly to pick up trash, hike, swim, and for the annual Dragon Scout Round Up in the Spring.
Den Leader Scott Foss loves that his daughter Heidi, who is 8 years old, can be in a group that has both boys and girls. “It’s great that families can take part together,” he said. Foss and two other dads – Keith Dunlap and Michael Kellar – encouraged the kids as they picked up fast food wrappers, discarded soda-pop cans, and other debris.
When asked what she liked most about scouting, Heidi said “I enjoy nature. And sling shots. And bb guns. And I like going fishing.”
Fellow scout Colton Kellar, also 8 years old, said “It’s important to give back to the community.”
The elder Kellar told Oakland County Times that “Overall it’s just a good way to bond. It’s good for them to have projects and get out of the house, and get off their phones. We get to have dad time, and the kids have so much energy.”
Dunlap added that scouting “teaches them life skills they wouldn’t learn anywhere else,” and that making time to come to Camp Agawam to clean “teaches them how to be selfless.”
It was only by happenstance that the scout troop stumbled upon a reporter in the woods that day, and they agreed to do a story “if it will help encourage other people to go out and do cleanups in their parks and neighborhoods more.”
