Video: County Treasurer Hoping to Reduce Foreclosure, Shares Resources

Pontiac, MI – Oakland County Treasurer Robert Wittenberg has been going around the county speaking at city council and commission meetings to let people know how to avoid foreclosure. We invited him to share the info with Oakland County Times as well.
When a property owner is delinquent on their property taxes to their local government for more than two years, the debt is sold to the County and they then work to collect. Property owners can pay all at once or set up a payment plan to avoid the property being foreclosed. March 31 is the deadline to reach out to prevent a foreclosure from happening.
Wittenberg hopes to see people and businesses pay the debt and keep their properties. “We really want people to reach out to us, because we don’t want to foreclose on anyone. That is not the goal. Foreclosure is the worst case scenario,” he said.
In his office there is a Financial Empowerment Center where people can speak with an expert about budgeting and what potential programs or grants they may qualify for. More information is available on the Oakland County Treasurer website.
