Reporter Food: Pik Nik Basket in Oak Park
(Crystal A. Proxmire, Jan. 16, 2022)
Oak Park, MI – I started off this year with a stroll down Nine Mile in Oak Park to take pictures of the new playscapes and features for pedestrians and bicyclists for this article, and while I was there I also met up with a friend for lunch at Pik Nik Basket.
Pik Nik Basket is a family-run cafe that grew out of a catering business. The brick and mortar location gives them space to help dine-in customers, carry out customers, and still do the catering that they love. For those dining in there are a number of sandwich choices, as well as soups, smoothies, and baked goods.
My friend had hot tea which came served on an adorably decorated tray with all the appropriate tea accessories. They also had the 9 Mile Club made with ham, turkey, bacon, lettuce, tomato, cheddar, house spread, and mustard on a croissant. Plus they had a bowl of turkey chili which came topped with diced tomatoes and green onion.
I started out with a real fruit smoothie, of which there is a whole big list of options. I declined the invitation to add spinach, but healthy-minded people should know that is an option. Based on the owner’s recommendation I had the Big Willie Philly, which is slow roasted beef dipped in Au-Jus with three cheeses and grilled onions and green peppers on a French sub bun.
We split a cupcake at the end to test out the owner’s baking skills. The counter is topped with her tasty creations.
Pik Nik Basket has a number of lunchtime items, with salads like the Chicken Greek, Taco Salad, Julius Caesar, Chicken Cobb, and Seafood Salad. The croutons are house-made.
Other sandwich choices have names like The Ferndale, The Detroiter, The Oak Park, and the Downriver Tuna.
Learn about these “deli delectables” and more at the Pik Nik Basket’s website or GrubHub page.
Visit in person at 8511 W 9 Mile Rd in Oak Park.
