Plan Ahead for Ferndale Library Temporary Closure
(FADL, Dec. 9, 2021)
Ferndale, MI – The Ferndale Library has some long-planned renovations that will finally begin on December 27, requiring the building to be closed from December 23 through January 2. During this time, some much-needed upgrades to the KIDS CORNER will commence with a fresh coat of paint, followed by the installation of new carpeting and furniture, an updated play area, and additional shelving for more books. In addition, because of planned updates to the staff workspace, the library will need to remain closed for the days between the Christmas holiday and New Year’s.
(Library Patrons) PLAN AHEAD
Library patrons should plan on picking up any of their available holds by December 22. Parents can stock up on children’s materials ahead of time, but digital content (for all ages) will always be available 24/7 to Ferndale Library cardholders, including eBooks/Audiobooks through LIBBY & HOOPLA, streaming music via FREEGAL, and video content from KANOPY.
AFTER REOPENING (Pardon Our Dust)
The main library, including public computer labs and private study rooms, will reopen to the public on Monday, January 3 at 10 am. However, patrons won’t be able to access the community room until updates to the staff work area are completed in late January, because staff will be using it as a workspace. There are several new lounge chairs set along the windows and near the fireplace to accommodate any patron seeking a quiet place to read or study, including the periodicals room and reservable private study rooms.

FYI TO PARENTS/CAREGIVERS
The KIDS CORNER will remain inaccessible during the first full week of January since the library will still be in the process of finishing up the installation of new furniture and additional shelving to the youth area. However, there will be carts featuring the newest items for kids of all ages available to browse. Holds will also be available to pick up.
THROUGHOUT THE WINTER: ATRIUM & VIRTUAL PROGRAMMING
Later this winter, the library will also be installing a new laptop bar along the windows of the front atrium by the west entrance. And, as early as Thurs., January 6, library staff will resume hosting virtual programming for patrons (via Zoom), including opportunities to attend ongoing events like the Cookbook Club, Writers’ Group, Podcast, and Virtual Storytimes for toddlers.
FADL Staff had hoped to begin these updates in 2020 when the library was closed during the COVID-19 lockdown, but due to various delays, including manufacturing slowdowns and shipping issues, the projects are happening within this condensed time period. Once everything’s in place, the library’s youth area will be better than ever; patrons can work or study within the glow of the atrium’s natural light on our new laptop bar, and there will be plenty of new cozy chairs throughout the library for reading during the winter.
