Reporter Food: The Red Hook in Detroit and Downtown Ferndale
(Crystal A. Proxmire, Aug. 18, 2021)
Ferndale, MI – Operating with a walk-up window since the pandemic, The Red Hook remains a popular spot for customers to grab coffee and baked goods in Downtown Ferndale.
There are many choices such as cookies, cakes, and muffins. But for my visit I picked three things.
For the savory side there’s the bacon cheddar popover – a buttery flaky biscuit with pieces of bacon baked right in.
I also enjoyed their homemade version of the pop tart – with buttery dough and strawberry jelly filling, topped with a layer of creamy frosting and sprinkles – a much more indulgent version of the grocery store toaster kind.
And lastly my personal stand-by favorite – fresh baked oatmeal cream pies. Again this local remake of a national treasure knocks the big corporate version out of the water. The soft thick cookies sandwiching a layer of rich white frosting make for a delightful sugar rush.
Coffee is of course a popular choice, but they also have tea, hot chocolate, and cold beverages include kombucha, Drought juices, and cold brew coffee. Guests can enjoy their yummy bites on tables out front or other benches in the Downtown Ferndale area (including this new one by Affirmations).
Red Hook is located at 220 W. 9 Mile Road in Downtown Ferndale, with a second location in West Village at 8025 Agnes Street in Detroit, and a third location in the works in Downtown Detroit at 2761 E. Jefferson. Learn more at https://theredhookcoffee.com/
