Ferndale Police Shoot Armed Robbery Suspect

Ferndale, MI – On August 12th, 2021, at approximately 5:50 p.m., Ferndale police officers responded to 7-11, located at 1040 W. Nine Mile Rd, on a report of an armed robbery. The unknown suspect, described as a light-skinned black male, wearing body armor and a mask, walked into the store with an assault rifle and demanded money. The suspect fired a round in the store during the commission of the crime. A large amount of cash was taken, and the suspect fled the store. No one was injured during the robbery.
Ferndale police officers located the suspect in a vehicle near the area of Sherman & Nine Mile in the City of Oak Park. The armed suspect did not comply with officer’s commands and attempted to evade them. Officers fired shots, striking the suspect. Officers immediately rendered life-saving measures and the suspect was transported to a local hospital. No officers were injured.
The suspect’s condition is critical, and he has not been identified yet.
This incident is currently under investigation by the Oakland County Sherriff’s Office Special Investigations Unit.
Ferndale Police Chief Dennis Emmi released the following statement
The incident that occurred today is an example of the difficult reality of policing and a scenario that no officer ever wants to encounter. I can assure you that they are trained to treat these decisions critically and with the utmost gravity.
While we all want quick information and answers, the best thing we can do right now is allow the details of this case to be studied and investigated—fully, impartially, and with great care. I have turned this case over to the Oakland County Sherriff’s Office for a full investigation.
We are committed to a thorough and meticulous investigative process and transparent sharing of information, and we appreciate your understanding as all agencies involved take the time necessary to do this the right way.
