Reporter Food: Rangoli Indian Cuisine in Auburn Hills
(Crystal A. Proxmire, Aug. 3, 2021)
Auburn Hills, MI – Rangoli Authentic Indian Cuisine has been serving hungry guests in the Auburn Hills area since 2000. According to their website, sisters Rashmi Rughani and Varsha Makhecha started the restaurant and brought on Chef Gill, as well as got their husbands Jagdish and Amit involved to add catering services.
The name Rangoli comes from traditional Indian artwork that is used to decorate homes, places of worship, and restaurants to help “welcome the Divine.”
The Divine spirit seems to come through in the care put into the meals. I ordered a few things, to taste a variety. and each was plentiful enough for leftovers. To start was the Lamb Lollipops, which were delicious, griddle seared minced lamb medallions made with ginger, cilantro, and green chilies. This went really well with the Garlic Naan, which is a big flat bread topped with minced garlic, butter, and cilantro.
I also ordered the Chicken 65 , made with yogurt chili pepper sauce, mustard seeds & curry leaves. This amazingly flavorful dish is a bold red color that reflects how it tastes. Like warmth. On the more mild side was the Navratan Koorma, which I loved so much! This was a dish of mixed vegetables & cashews, cashew onion & cream sauce with rice. This nutty rich flavor was soaked up by the rice, and the cashews gave little bites of crunch that were perfect to savor.
I feel bad even trying to pick other items from the menu to feature, because there are so many choices! Among those choices are Baingan Bharta (Slow-roasted eggplant & peas, cilantro fenugreek, tomatoes & cream. Served with brown or white basmati rice), Chicken Tandoori (chicken on the bone, yogurt ginger garlic marinade, paprika infused, clay oven baked. Served with brown or white basmati rice & curry sauce), and Nargisi Aloo (potato halves, vegetable cashew filling, tomato cream, curried lentils. Served with white or brown basmati rice & naan bread or tandoori roti).
