Brawl Leads to Shootout, Injury at Gridiron Bar and Grill

SUMMARY: At 2:14am, Deputies and Star EMS responded to the Gridiron Bar and Grill located at 98 E. Montcalm Street on the report of multiple people fighting. As deputies were responding, another caller reported that he had been shot in the arm and that he was in the parking lot of a tire store.
Upon arrival, deputies observed that a crowd of 50-60 people were rapidly emptying out of the parking lot of the bar. Deputies spoke with the waitress who stated that a verbal altercation began between two male subjects over a spilt beer. The two subjects exited the bar and into the parking lot where a physical altercation took place. The waitress stated that multiple subjects began to fight in the parking lot and that she heard 6-8 shots fired.
Additional responding deputies located the victim in the parking lot of Jimenez Tire Repair, located at 121 E. Montcalm Street. The victim had been shot in the left arm. The bullet travelled through his left arm and was imbedded in the left side of his chest. Star EMS arrived on the scene and rendered aid to the victim.
The victim stated to deputies that a large fight had broken out in the parking lot of the bar. To break up the fight he pulled out his handgun that he had been “open carrying” in the bar and fired a shot into the ground. The victim stated that someone in the crowd began shooting at him and he had been struck. Deputies secured the weapon. Multiple shell casings were recovered from the victim’s gun which showed he fired more than one shot.
OUTCOME OF INCIDENT: Paramedics transported the victim to McLaren Oakland Hospital where he is listed in stable condition. Detectives arrived on the scene and began their investigation. An OCSO Evidence Technician processed the scene.
