Reporter Food: Old Detroit Burger Bar
(Crystal A. Proxmire, June 14, 2021)
Lake Orion, Troy, Clawson, Lapeer, Clarkston, MI – Old Detroit Burger Bar is a locally-owned chain with an obvious theme. Their menu is full of hamburgers, named after streets in Detroit.
In the mood for something messy, I oped for a Gratiot Avenue burger from their Baldwin Road location in Orion Township. This beast of a burger was 1/2 lb of Angus beef topped with lettuce, tomatoes, onions, pickles, bacon, mushrooms, fried onions, cheddar, Swiss, and a fried egg.
Burgers come with a choice of waffle fries, tater tots, fries, or onion rings, but in keeping with my theme of messy indulgence I upgraded to chili cheese fries.
The burger was perfectly cooked and deliciously greasy. And I loved that the bun came branded with the restaurant’s logo. And by branded I mean seared with heat, not just the typical marketing term.
Other gourmet burgers include The Woodward (topped with mushrooms and Swiss), The Mack Avenue (topped with Cajun seasoning and crumbled bleu cheese), and The Jefferson (made on grilled rye bread topped with Swiss, grilled onions, and 1000 island dressing. For vegetarians, The Heart Plaza is a soy-based burger. And for those not in the mood for beef, some options include the Southern Fried Chicken Sandwich, The Onion Wrap, and The Downtowner BLT Sandwich.
