Civil War Cannon Helps Pleasant Ridge Honor Memorial Day
(Thomas Treuter, Crystal A. Proxmire, June 8, 2021)
Pleasant Ridge, MI – “Pleasant Ridge’s 2021 ceremonial recognition of Memorial Day continued the tradition that began on Monday, May 26, 1969. While some components were missing this year due to COVID, it was great to be back after last year’s cancellation,” said Pleasant Ridge Mayor Kurt Metzger following the community’s annual observance.
“One component that was not missing was the firing of Ron Cleveland’s Civil War Cannon, circa 1862, which officially opens and closes the ceremony with a big bang.  Facebook posts that morning made it obvious that a number of residents were surprised, and confused, by the house shaking nature of the “Booms.”

In between the loud parts, speakers included 45th District Court Judge Jamie Powell Horowitz, State Representative Regina Weiss of the 27th District, and of course the Mayor.
Pleasant Ridge Police Chief Kevin Nowak and Ferndale Fire Chief Teresa Robinson placed a wreath at the PR War Memorial monument. Three of the City Commissioners Bret Scott, Amanda Wahl and Christopher Budnik read the names of those listed on the Memorial.  The Memorial includes a Memorial Stone, Memorial Bricks, Memorial Trees, and Memorial Benches.
