Reporter Food: Whiskey Taco Foxtrot in Clawson
(Crystal A. Proxmire, May 26, 2021)
Clawson, MI – After interviewing magician Anthony Grupido, who spoke so fondly of his favorite taco place, I could not resist checking out the Downtown Clawson’s “taqueria and bar” called Whiskey Taco Foxtrot. Grupido is on hand the first Thursday of the month from 6-9pm to add some magic to the menu, sharing his tricks while guests enjoy the tacos.
The menu at Whiskey Taco Foxtrot is mainly an assortment of mix and match street tacos with corn or flour tortilla options. There are other entrees, and of course a nice selection of whiskeys.
To give a fair sampling, I picked four of the tacos. My absolute favorite was the fajita chicken taco with perfectly sauteed onions and red peppers. Everything seemed to just melt together. The Tex Mex Beef on a crunchy shell was so deliciously greasy that the shell was soaked in flavor and bites of the generously portioned beef just oozed with it. That might actually be tied with number one. I may have to do another test soon.
I also loved my other two choices. The potato and avocado with chipolte mayo, lettuce and pepper jack cheese was like fire, but the potatoes were so perfectly crispy on the edges that I powered through. And the chimichurri steak was also amazing. I don’t think I’ve had chimichurri sauce before, but it’s a cilantro based sauce, nice and oily, with some red pepper and balsamic to it. Good stuff. This steak had that plus some cool crisp chopped onions.
All of these options really were made well, and the others on the menu sound great too. Like honey bee market chorizo, bang bang shrimp, fried avocado and more.
There are some things other than tacos as well, like the veggie burrito, botana nachos, and a few burrito choices.
Whiskey Taco Foxtrot wouldn’t live up to their name if they didn’t have a nice selection of adult beverages – which are available for dine in and for carryout customers aged 21 and older.
There is a nice list of bourbons and ryes, with their hometowns included on the menu. For example there’s Woodford Reserve from Versailes, KY, Old Forrester Rye from Louisville, KY, and Traverse City Whiskey from right here in Michigan. Being the connoisseur that I am not, I was delighted to take home a little jar containing my shot of Skrewball Peanut Butter Whiskey, made in California.
Whiskey Taco Foxtrot is located at 28 S. Main Street. Learn more about this Veteran-owned Downtown Clawson spot at https://www.whiskeytacofoxtrotclawson.com/
