Reporter Food: Shine Cafe
(Crystal A. Proxmire, April 26, 2021)
Troy, MI – The folks at Shine Cafe in Troy are pretty darn confident about their food. “These aren’t your mom’s breakfast recipes…it’s where she goes for inspiration,” boasts their website.
I had a nice carryout order that mixed some healthy with some divine. The sweetest bites were from the the fried biscuits – which as the name suggests was a pair of fresh baked biscuits deep fried and dusted with cinnamon sugar and served with Smucker’s apple butter. This was a treat of unnecessary goodness that I hopefully balanced out with the main course – the Bravo omelete.
Okay, so maybe this was not the most healthy either. The Bravo is an omelete filled with bacon and Monterey jack cheese and topped with a scoop of sliced avocado served with breakfast potatoes and generously buttered pumpernickel toast.
Other omelete options include the Mistake (corned beef, pastrami, onion, green pepper, Swiss ), the Nola (Andouille sausage, onion, green pepper, American cheese), and the Sam ( baby spinach, broccoli, ham, Swiss). Patrons can also build their own with about 20 different toppings to chose from. There are also “wonderful waffles,” “french toast creations,” “specialty benedicts,” and “bountiful breakfast bowls.”
For lunch there are sandwiches and wraps, including the Broccoli Reuben, the Tuna Tzatziki, and the Birmingham Burger which comes topped with grilled onions, bacon, Swiss and blue cheeses.
