Reporter Food – First Watch
(Crystal A. Proxmire, March 22, 2021)
Troy, Royal Oak, MI – First Watch is a small chain of convenient, but well-made, breakfast and lunch items. They’re located mainly in Metro Detroit and the Cleveland, OH area. (Hi Ohio, say hello to our Columbus-based sponsor White Castle!) In Oakland County they’ve got two in Troy and one in Royal Oak, with others nearby in Livonia, Sterling Heights, and Shelby Twp.
The website explains the First Watch name, saying “Since the majority of our customers are not sailors, pirates or sea-farin’ scallywags, we seem to get this question a lot. A “first watch” is a nautical term that refers to the very first shift of the day. And if you ask us, it’s the best shift of the day. That’s because come the crack of dawn, we’re slicing and juicing fresh fruit and vegetables and whipping up our French toast batter from scratch, just for you.”
I ordered the Bacado Omelet made with bacon, avocado, Monterey Jack cheese and sour cream with seasoned potatoes for the side. Plus I had a soft tasty biscuit topped with delicious turkey sausage gravy.
I also ordered the Purple Haze drink made with butterfly pea flower tea, lavender, lemon, and cane sugar.
The food was a step above fast food, and there are lots of interesting choices. Other items include pesto chicken quinoa bowls, farm stand breakfast tacos, lemon ricotta pancakes, and sandwiches like the market veggie and the Monterey club sandwich.
