Reporter Food: Downtown Charlie’s in Clawson
(Crystal A. Proxmire, March 14, 2021)
Clawon, MI – Downtown Charlie’s, located at 236 S. Main Street in Clawson, is one of the businesses that got it’s start during the pandemic. This cozy cafe features breakfast and lunch fare, with both in person and carryout options.
A friend and I went for brunch recently and sampled the best of both meals.
They opted for a bit of breakfast with Charlie’s version of Eggs Benedict. This features Pastrami on an English Muffin topped with spinach, poached eggs, Hollandaise and scallions. It comes with hash browns, and my friend also added on a cup of chili for a quick warm up on what was one of the last cold days of the season.
I aimed for lunch with the pulled pork sliders. This trio of sliders was made with a super sweet BBQ sauce as well as coleslaw and a pickle. I also had a Root Down fresh juice with beet, carrot, lemon, ginger and turmeric that was so good I gulped it down before getting a picture. Other fresh juice choices stick with a Beastie Boys song theme – like the Body Movin’ and the Sure Shot.
Downtown Charlie’s partners with Apple Fritter Donuts in Ferndale, with pastry-based delights such as the jumbo cinnamon roll and the Apple Fritter French Toast which has a hand-dipped maple bacon apple fritter topped with caramel, whipped cream, and caramelized apples.
Other breakfast options include avocado toast, breakfast quesadilla, and a whole section devoted to lox. For the lunchtime crowd there are sandwiches and sliders, including Philly Cheesesteak, BLT, and grilled cheese with tomato soup.
