March 14 – SAGE Hosting Virtual Artist Discussion with Michelle Sider
Michigan-based Multimedia Artist Michelle Sider is pleased to partner for the first time with SAGE Metro Detroit and the Hannan Center as a featured speaker for the upcoming Second Sunday Art Program.
This all-virtual event is set for 1 p.m. Sunday, March 14 and open to the public. The program aims to provide a space for enrichment and connection for the LGBTQ+ and Same Gender Loving communities.
“Older adults, especially in LGBTQ+ communities, can be fairly isolated, a problem that has become exacerbated by this pandemic,” said Carrick Copeland, program director at SAGE Metro Detroit. “The Second Sundays Art Project provides our elders a unique opportunity to connect while celebrating, appreciating and learning about art directly from the artists themselves.”
Sider says she is pleased to be featured in this upcoming program.
“Art is a very powerful tool for telling stories, making connections and communicating about the human experience,” she says. “Especially now when so many people are feeling isolated, it is even more important than ever to share parts of ourselves through visual art, dance, music, storytelling and all of the arts.
“I hope that my ‘I am Yemenite’ series will spark important conversations not only about Arab, Jewish Yemenite experiences but also about larger societal issues, and will help us all to come a little bit closer to one another through sharing and understanding experiences.”
Sider is excited to show her studio and share a glimpse of her life as an artist with those who choose to attend this hour-long virtual event.
She believes the program will demonstrate the ways in which art can tell stories about minority populations. Those interested in stories of perseverance, faith, oppression, bravery, Middle Eastern cultures and Arab Jews, will find her talk interesting.
“I will share some of the fascinating aspects of the culture, history and practices of the religious minority of Arab Jews in Yemen as well as my journey in creating this series of glass mosaic portraits,” says Sider. “I began researching and interviewing people in 2019 and I will share how these experiences have influenced my work. I will be sharing images of my glass mosaic portraits and some behind the scenes images of the creative process.”
