Fire Damages Units at Self Storage Facility in Troy
Troy, MI – On Wednesday, Dec. 16 at 12:31am, The Troy Fire Department was dispatched to the report of smoke and flames seen at Extra Space Storage, a large self-storage facility, on Coolidge Hwy South of Maple.
Upon arrival, firefighters found a large one-story storage unit building with flames through the roof. Defensive operations we established, firefighters quickly deployed handlines and master stream devices to apply water and Class A firefighting foam to the fire.
Firefighters also used gas powered saws and hand tools to gain access to the individual storage units. Due to the large number of units involved and the heavy fire load within the units additional manpower was needed and a second alarm was requested brining Station 1 to the scene. Extensive overhaul was needed to get to hot spots throughout the building and many of the items had to be removed by hand. More than 40 firefighters braved the below freezing temperatures working on scene for nearly seven hours to extinguish the fire. In excess of fifty storage units were affected by the fire.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, and damage estimates are incomplete. All of the storage unit renters that were affected by the fire will be contacted by Extra Space Storage.
No injuries or fatalities were reported.
No further details are available at this time.
