Explore: Wild Lights at the Detroit Zoo
(Crystal A. Proxmire, Dec. 11, 2020)
Royal Oak, MI – Each year the Detroit Zoo transforms into a wonderland of sparkles and songs with the annual Wild Lights experience. This gigantic immersive holiday light show features over million LED lights along a pathway lined with sculptures and animations – including some that tower overhead.
Sections of the park take on different themes, with music and light setting the mood for enchantment.  In one lovely spot there are shapes of fancy holiday ornaments, including a room-sized golden globe with intricate white trim where guests can step in for a selfie.
Another area boasts animals of Africa, where the long necks of  giraffes made with bright orange light guide one’s eyes upward to the sky, and the animated chomping of an alligator’s jaw also helps one notice the subtle dimming and brightening of blue bulbs along the ground that give the illusion of moving water.
There’s a tunnel of lights along the pathway, a section where moving laser dots make patterns on the ground and on the people passing through, and a median that moves visitors with musical modern art.
What is captured in this article is only a taste of the magic to be enjoyed at the Wild Lights experience.
Because of social distancing limitations, tickets this year sold out fast.  But folks can check out the Detroit Zoo website as tickets may be come available due to cancellations.
