A panel of prominent Michigan leaders will engage in a webinar conversation “Racism: Public Health Crisis in BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) Communities” on Monday, November 16, 7:00 – 8:30 p.m.
The free event, sponsored by Women Confronting Racism, will explore the intersection of race, racism, and health disparities in the state of Michigan. Senator Debbie Stabenow will open the discussion with observations regarding racism as a public health crisis. Panelists Dr. Kent Key, Michigan State University’s College of Human Medicine; Justin Onwenu, Sierra Club of Detroit; and Tawana Nettles-Robinson, Trinity Health’s Executive Director of Medical Services for Detroit will consider questions of environment, mental health, racism and health disparities from their vantage points of experience and leadership.
The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed rather than created health disparities in the state of Michigan, and throughout the United States. The statistics are clear. According to an April 2, 2020 article in The Detroit News, “At least 40% of those killed by the novel coronavirus in Michigan so far are black, a percentage that far exceeds the proportion of African Americans in the Detroit region and state.” Participants will learn more about such statistics and the interplay of race and racism in matters of health care in Michigan. In addition, questions and comments will be exchanged among and between panelists and participants.
