Reporter Food: J’s Penalty Box in Downtown Ferndale
(Crystal A. Proxmire, Nov. 13, 2020)
Ferndale, MI – Although they’re a sports bar, J’s Penalty Box in Downtown Ferndale is gaining a reputation for their carry-out service, especially their pizza.
I got my first J’s Penalty Box Pizza recently – the coney version. Featured under their specialty pizza section, this pie was topped with sliced Koegel’s hot dogs, block chili, white onion, yellow mustard, and mozzarella cheese on very tasty pizza dough. I’ve never had a pizza with coney stuff on it, and this was actually even better than a coney dog itself.
They’ve got a lot of traditional toppings: Hand Cut Pepperoni, Ham, Ground Beef, Italian Sausage, Bacon, Mushroom, Tomato, Pineapple, Green Olives, Black Olives, Onion, Green Pepper, Jalapeños, and Banana Peppers. For those looking for a healthier, gluten-free version there’s a cauliflower crust available.
J’s also has nice selection of burgers and sandwiches like the California Reuben, Chipotle Black Bean Veggie Burger, Slap-Shot Grilled Cheese, a Gobbler Burger and more.
Appetizer-wise there’s traditional bar favorites like nachos, chicken wings, and potato skins. But there’s also unique items like the pierogi plate, garlic fried pickle spears, and Bebe’s meat pie egg rolls.
J’s Penalty Box is located at 22726 Woodward Ave. in Downtown Ferndale. Check them out online at www.jspenaltybox.com.
