Reporter Food – Clawson Steak House
(Crystal A. Proxmire, Nov. 7, 2020)
Clawson, MI- The Clawson Steak House at 56 S. Rochester Road (at 14 Mile) has been serving guests for over 60 years, in a dining room that seems like it must not ever have changed. Above the cloth-covered seats and sturdy booths are lamps ringed with plastic crystals, while other mid-century modern features add nostalgia to one’s visit. The epitome of this is the stage, where in non-pandemic times diners might enjoy live performances.
A friend and I shared an appetizer of calamari, which are rings of chewy squid fried with breading. Then came the main course. We both ordered the same thing – the house-cut prime rib topped with melted bleu cheese and a baked potato for the side. The meal also came with a basket of breadsticks and rolls, as well as a salad and a cup of soup, which was French Onion for me. The prices were surprisingly low for such meals, which could be part of their recipe for success.
While the stage was empty, we did have a moment of entertainment when a nearby table ordered Saganaki – which is Greek Kasseri cheese set on fire table-side.
The Clawson Steak House has a menu of traditional steak favorites like Filet Mignon, New York, Delmonico, and Porterhouse. There’s also a $77.95 Bone-In Waygu New York steak which is served with drawn butter. Maybe something to think about for next time.
Beyond beef, the restaurant offers lamb chops, pork chops, a variety of fish, chicken, and veal dishes, and even frog legs.
We were too full for dessert, but there are several choices for those who pace themselves better. Among them are New York Cheese Cake, Carrot Cake, Creme Brulee, Hot Caramel Brownie and more.
