Reporter Food: Culantro in Downtown Ferndale
(Crystal A. Proxmire, Nov. 5, 2020)
Ferndale, MI- Finding a restaurant that is good for easy, healthy carryout items is a wonderful thing, and I’m happy to share what’s become one of my go-to dishes – the Aji de Gallina from Culantro in Downtown Ferndale.
Aji de Gallina is a classic Peruvian dish made of shredded chicken in a yellow cream sauce made with walnuts and Amarillo peppers topped with a wedge of hard boiled egg and olive along with a bed of white rice. This warm, comforting dish is an easy favorite.
I’m also quite fond of the Empanada appetizer which is two turnovers filled with beef, olives, eggs, and Peruvian spices. These are slightly sweet, deliciously crispy, and filling.
And of course there are some good dessert choices. My favorite is the Tres Lehces cake, which is fluffy white cake soaked in a cream topping, with a cherry on top.
The menu is full of amazing choices. Starting with dessert first, which I like to do, options include chocolate cake, flan, Alfrajores cookies, and Mousse De Maracuja which is a passion fruit gelatin dessert they call “sweet ecstasy” on their menu.
I’ve previously reviewed their Pollo a la Brasssa, which is slow roasted chicken. Other meals include the Lomo Saltado, Seco a la Nortena, Tallarin Verde, Arroz Chaufa, and Patacones Picantes.
And if you don’t know what any of those items are, you can find them and other delicious choices on the Culantro Website.
Culantro is located at 22939 Woodward Avenue in Downtown Ferndale. They have inside seating, carry out, and can be delivered through Door Dash.
