Ferndale Police Go Curbside with Community Chats

Ferndale, MI – Spaced apart on the sidewalk, with masks on their faces, residents came together on Laprarie for a “Street Corner Round Table” with the Ferndale Police.
It’s part of an effort by the department to demonstrate a community policing model, where officers and the top brass are out about in the neighborhoods, building rapport with the residents.  And it was a chance for residents to show their appreciation as well.
Dale Vigliarolo, who serves as the President of the Ferndale Area Chamber of Commerce, had attended a previous community chat and thought it would be great to host one in his neighborhood.  Another resident near Wanda and E. Webster had the same idea, so the police set up a double-header that warm August evening, meeting with even more residents at the second location.
Vigliarolo and his wife Karin  introduced various neighbors and made the police feel welcomed as well. Police Chief Vincent Palazzolo was there along with Captain Dennis Emmi and Community Engagement Officer Jill Mahlmeister.
“The police do a lot for the community, and they need to know we appreciate them,” Dale said.
Much of the conversation happened around COVID-19 and questions of compliance with state orders, and the police even had bottles of hand sanitizer and masks for residents.  They also talked about expectations for the Dream Cruise, plans for the 8 Mile and Woodward overpass, and how people can feel welcomed to reach out with concerns at any time.
Mayor Melanie Piana rode her bike to attend the Laprarie Street visit.
“I love this program because it’s a resident hosted gathering of neighbors,” she said.   “Our Police Department wants to nurture relationships with our residents, and the Curbside chats are one way to get to know our PD. Residents have direct access to our Police Chief, Captain, and Community Engagement Officer to ask questions about any issue and give feedback. I have learned a great deal listening to our residents when I’m able to attend.”
