County Urges Face Mask Use as COVID Cases on the Rise
(Crystal A. Proxmire, July 24, 2020)
Oakland County, MI – With COVID-19 cases trending back upward, Oakland County Executive David Coulter issued a statement urging people to wear face masks.
“Oakland County’s COVID-19 numbers have seen an increase in the last weeks we believe as a result of gatherings during the July Fourth holiday, and hot spots like those that were occurring at local bars. For example, we are currently monitoring over 1,500 active cases in the county and tracing their potential contacts. That compares to just over 600 active cases a few weeks – a sharp and disturbing rise,” Coulter said.
“We are watching these numbers carefully and hope that our renewed focus on wearing facial coverings will stem this increase.”
Oakland County has a dashboard with information and data, including a zip code map of cases and deaths.  Every community has experienced infection, but current hot spots include Commerce Twp, West Bloomfield, Franklin, Farmington and Farmington Hills, Lake Orion, Birmingham, Southfield and Lathrup Village. The county website also provides resources, information about grant programs, testing and more.
The total number of cases is 10,550, with 7,789 recoveries and 1,070 deaths.
In April the number of new cases per day spiked to nearly 300. In June new daily cases reached a low of 9 on June 16. Cases in July thus far have peaked at 90 per day which was July 21.
