Man Shoots Self in Rear with Gun in Pocket at Hospital, Damages Chair
(OCSO, July 12, 2020) 
Independence Twp, MI –   Deputies were dispatched to the McLaren Medical Group at 5625Water Tower Place on a report of an accidental discharge of a firearm around 3pm on July 8. Medical staff reported while inside an exam room, a male subject discharged one round from a handgun into a chair. When the gun discharged, the round grazed the subject’s buttocks, resulting in a minor injury. Medical staff came to his aid, but the subject refused medical treatment and left the medical facility prior to Deputies arrival. The subject, who was identified by the medical staff, was subsequently located at his residence in the City of Pontiac. When interviewed he indicated he found the gun outside his home and put it in his pocket prior to his appointment. While in the exam room, he reached his hand into his pocket and the gun discharged. After the gun discharged, he reported giving the gun to his brother who claims the gun was thrown into a nearby lake.
OUTCOME OF INCIDENT: Deputies recovered a spent bullet from the office chair and placed it into property. Detectives were notified and are continuing with the investigation. The OCSO Dive Team was requested to search the nearby lake, in an attempt to locate the discarded firearm. Upon conclusion of the investigation, the matter will be forwarded to the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
