June 30:  Ferndale Library Hosting Virtual Author Talk with Robert Feiseler

June 30:  Ferndale Library Hosting Virtual Author Talk with Robert Feiseler

FERNDALE, MIThe Ferndale Library’s annual Summer Reading series of events and programs are entirely virtual this year. While the library progresses steadily through a six-stage reopening plan that prioritizes an assurance of safety for patrons and staff, its shifted focus toward providing contactless curbside pickup services of loanable materials. Meanwhile, events such as a history of Great Lakes shipwrecks, an Adult Storytime, and a program on gardens for pollinators will be presented virtually through video services like ZOOM and Facebook Live.

The Ferndale Library’s next virtual program is hosted on Tues., June 30, in conjunction with a commemoration of Pride Month, featuring award-winning author Robert W. Fieseler, discussing his debut book, Tinderbox: The Untold Story of the Up Stairs Lounge Fire and the Rise of Gay Liberation. The book tells the story of the 1973 arson fire at the Up Stairs Lounge in New Orleans–the largest mass murder of queer people in American history prior to the 2016 Pulse nightclub shooting. Tinderbox won the 2019 Edgar Award for Best Fact Crime writing, as well as Lambda Literary’s Judith A. Markowitz Award for Emerging LGBTQ Writers. The American Library Association also named this book a Stonewall Honor Book in Nonfiction.

Buried for decades, the Up Stairs Lounge tragedy has only recently emerged as a catalyzing event of the gay liberation movement. In revelatory detail, Robert W. Fieseler chronicled the tragic event that claimed the lives of 31 men and one woman on June 24, 1973. Robert W. Fieseler is a journalist and essayist who graduated co-valedictorian from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and received the Pulitzer Traveling Fellowship and the Lynton Fellowship in Book Writing. Fieseler is also 2019’s National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association “Journalist of the Year.”
