Body in Pontiac’s Galloway Park Believed to be 2019 Shooting Victim Eugene Bass

Pontiac, MI – On May 18, 2020, Detectives received information on the location of the victim in the May 23, 2019 homicide of Lansing resident Eugene Bass. Detectives responded to Galloway Lake Park at 1470 N. Perry in the City of Pontiac and discovered skeletal remains in a wooded area of the park.
The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Forensic Laboratory responded to the scene as well as an investigator from the Oakland County Medical Examiner’s Office. An autopsy is scheduled for May 19, 2020. Positive identification is pending the confirmation of dental records, but the remains are believed to be that of Eugene Bass. Next of kin has been notified.

The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office has arrested the suspect wanted in connection with the murder of City of Lansing resident Eugene Bass.
On May 23rd, 2019, Deputies from the Pontiac Substation responded to the area of Midland and Michigan Avenue for a report of a shooting. Witnesses advised a person in a silver Chevrolet Equinox had been shot in the driveway of a residence on Midland.
Deputies checked the area and were unable to locate the vehicle or the victim. The homeowner was not present at the time of the incident, but provided information on who owned the silver Chevrolet Equinox. Deputies secured the scene and located a spent shell casing in the driveway.
Deputies responded to another location in the 800 block of Palmer Avenue believed to be the residence of the owner of the Chevrolet Equinox. The vehicle was located, and a large quantity of blood was observed throughout the interior of the vehicle where it appeared someone had attempted to clean up the evidence.
Deputies searched the residence for the victim where the vehicle was located with negative results. Witnesses were located and were interviewed by Pontiac Substation Detectives. Evidence was collected by the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Forensic Laboratory which conducted DNA testing on the blood from the vehicle. The blood was a match to Eugene Bass.
The suspect was located and taken into custody on unrelated charges while the homicide investigation continued. On July 23rd, 2019, the case was presented to the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office and criminal charges were issued.
Paul Anthony Hall, a 46-year-old City of Pontiac resident, has been charged with the following:

Count 1 – Homicide – Open Murder – Life Felony
Count 2 – Possession of a Firearm in the Commission of the Felony – 2-year Felony
Count 3 – Weapons – Firearms – Possession by a Felon – 5-year Felony
Count 4 – Possession of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony – 2-year Felony

Hall was arraigned on July 23rd, 2019, in 50th District Court in front of the Honorable Judge Michael Martinez. Bond was denied. A probable cause conference has been scheduled for August 1st, 2019, in front of the Honorable Judge Ronda Fowlkes Gross at 1:30pm. Hall has numerous previous convictions include multiple cases of Delivery/Manufacture of a Controlled Substance (Cocaine, Heroin, or Another Narcotic), Fleeing and Eluding, Aggravated Assault, and Domestic Violence.
The body of Eugene Bass has not been recovered. Detectives and Deputies continue to conduct searches and cadaver dogs have aided in these efforts as well.
