O’Mara’s Irish Pub Closed
After Mothers Day Morning Fire
(Crystal A. Proxmire, May 10, 2020)
Berkley, MI – An early morning fire has closed O’Mara’s Irish Pub in Downtown Berkley.
Being close to the fire station proved to be a bonus of the 12 Mile and Coolidge location, as the fire was extinguished quickly, however it will still be 3-4 weeks before they can reopen.
According to Berkley Public Safety:
On Sunday, May 10th, 2020, at approximately 5:30 AM, the Berkley Department of Public Safety was dispatched to a fire alarm at O’Mara’s Restaurant, located at 12 Mile and Coolidge. Upon leaving the station, PSO’s could smell smoke and observe fire on the roof of the business. A box alarm was immediately called and PSO’s from Huntington Woods, Oak Park, and Beverly Hills also responded to assist. Entry was made to the building and the interior fire was quickly extinguished. PSO’s also accessed the roof and extinguished the fire there. The business suffered relatively minor damage and there were no injuries. BDPS would like to thanks HWDPS, OPDPS, and BVPDS for their assistance.
This morning O’Mara’s social media manager told Oakland County Times that the restaurant would remain open.  This was later corrected and this story has been updated with the most current information.
Owner Kevin O’Mara told Oakland County Times “I am very proud as the owner of O’Mara’s that our staff conducts itself in such a way that nearly 1000 people every year choose our food and service to help make so many Mothers feel special. Not being able to help that happen this morning is one more bitter pill to swallow. We are making hundreds of phone calls right now so that families can make other arrangements. We are sending out extra special love to all the Mom’s out there today. I am lucky that my Mom is still alive and she taught me how to get through difficulties large and small with a mixture of grace, grit, tenacity and love. I love being able to serve our community in the very unique way that O’Mara’s Restaurant does. We will be back open as soon as it is safe to do so. Happy Mother’s Day.”
