Explore: Proud Lake Recreation Area
(Crystal A. Proxmire, April 18, 2020)
Commerce Township, MI – If you don’t like the weather in Michigan, just wait five minutes and it will change. Thankfully all kinds of weather can be beautiful, and earlier this week at Proud Lake Recreation Area I got to experience a beautiful mix within one lovely morning walk.
As people practice social distancing, Proud Lake is a great option for fresh air and sunshine. With 20 miles of trails it’s easy to stay more than six feet apart!  This state-owned oasis boasts 4,700 acres that includes options for camping, mountain-biking, horseback riding, cross-country skiing, hunting areas, canoeing, picnicking, and fishing.
The light snow drew me to nature, and it peaked as I began to walk around the lake.  A single white swan seemed to guard the lake, it’s head popping up over the reeds to keep tabs on my location.  As the sun rose higher and the snow stopped I made my way though an amazing patch of tall pine trees. Then downhill into a wetland area marked with plaques about legendary Ottawa Chief Pontiac who fought against British invasion of native land.
Past the wetland I came to the Huron River, and also to an eerily quiet conference center with an empty fire pit.  After a two hour walk I still only had a taste of what this amazing park had to offer.
Proud Lake Recreation Area is located at 3500 North Wixom Road in Commerce Township. Find out more at the DNR website.
