Reporter Food: Boukie’s Grill in Downtown Royal Oak
(Crystal A. Proxmire, Feb. 24, 2020)
Royal Oak, MI- A friend and I had the most indulgent feast the other night in Downtown Royal Oak at Boukie’s Grill. We ordered the Boukie’s platter which is designed to serve two but provided us both with enough food for leftovers. The platter came with shish kafta, chicken kafta, shish tawook, shish kabob, mixed shawarma, two falafel, two grape leaves, roasted veggies, rice and hummus. Plus we each got to pick soup or salad. I had the lemon rice soup and he ordered a salad.
It was so fun being able to just dive into a mix of flavors. I especially liked the housemade hummus and the roasted veggies. The meats were all well-seasoned and juicy. I also had a Banana Colada smoothie made with banana, pineapple, and colada cream.
It was also fun sitting at booth at the corner of 11 Mile and Main Street as the sun set and the city lit up with the signs of the various businesses. There’s a parking deck right next door on 11 Mile that offers beautiful views of downtown, as well as the skyscrapers of Downtown Detroit in the distance. So, that was fun too.
Boukie’s has both booth and table seating, and a menu to suit appetites of any size. Even those with American tastes can stray from the Middleeastern cuisine for some cheese sticks, Caesar salad, or wing dings.
But of course the restaurant is known for their traditional cuisine including baked kibbeh, Fattoush salad, tabbouleh, gyros and more.
Boukie’s Grill is located at 105 S Main St, Royal Oak, MI 48067. Find out more on their website www.boukiesgrillro.com.
