How to Race a Unicorn
(Crystal A. Proxmire, Feb. 22, 2020)
Ferndale, MI- “And they’re off!”
The thrill of racing is coming to Ferndale, but of course with a Ferndale twist.  Instead of horses, piggies, or greyhounds, the Ferndale Area Chamber of Commerce is taking an approach that doesn’t put living creatures at risk – but instead has creatively decorated wooden unicorns going head to head with dropping lottery-like balls to determine the mythical creatures’ moves.
The event takes place at Incubizo (1938 Burdette Street, Ferndale, MI 48220) on April 24 beginning at 6pm, with fun and festivities inside and out.
Individuals and businesses can spend $150 on a plain wooden unicorn silhouette and base they can decorate to represent their brand or whatever other fabulous design suits their fancy.  The unicorns may be on display at their business or at Incubizo in the weeks leading up to the race.  Then they’ll be pitted against each other while being cheered on by friends, neighbors, and fellow entrepreneurs.
Tri Pups Construction is one of the event sponsors, donating the materials and the labor to cut the 36 available unicorn silhouettes. They modeled their unicorn after a handyperson, complete with a TriPups hat and tool belt.
A portion of the proceeds goes to Kiwanis Foster Program and the Chamber Youth Initiative.
In addition to the race, the event will feature a derby hat contest, a bow tie contest, delicious appetizers, beer and wine, a contest for best dressed unicorn, and a reverse raffle with lots of great prizes including up to a $10,000 cash prize.
Unicorns are still available, as are tickets to the event.  For more information visit the Ferndale Area Chamber of Commerce website.
