Ferndale, MI – Two officers were injured Monday night while arresting a 28 year old man who fled a traffic stop in Ferndale.
According to Sgt. Baron Brown of the Ferndale Police, “Our officer observed a vehicle speeding on 8 Mile. He stopped the vehicle, obtained ID from the driver, and during the interaction he noticed indicators of intoxication.
“He asked the driver if he would submit to a series of field sobriety tests to determine whether he was OWI. The driver rolled up his window and fled, turning NB on Kensington, WB on Marshfield and then NB on Pinecrest.
“In the interest of safety, the pursuit was terminated near Marshfield and Kensington but officers were able to keep a visual on the fleeing vehicle. The driver crashed the vehicle into a tree near the corner of Pinecrest and Leroy at which time he fled into the yards.
“Our officer closely followed the suspect on foot locating and arresting him in the back yard of 1270 Leroy. The suspect resisted being handcuffed and tried to punch our officers with a closed fist on several occasions. He was eventually handcuffed and secured in a scout car. He was transported to Ascension Hospital where he was seen for minor injuries suffered during the crash and arrest, and so that officers could execute a search warrant to obtain an evidentiary sample of his blood.
“The driver was arrested for fleeing, operating while intoxicated, driving while license suspended (23 current suspensions) and resisting and obstructing for fighting with officers.
“Two of our officers also suffered injuries in this incident. One suffered a minor laceration to his hand and the other broke his arm during the foot chase.”
The suspect is a 28 year old male from Detroit driving a silver 2014 Ford Edge.
