Reporter Food: Sunrise Café in Farmington Hills
(Crystal A. Proxmire, Oct. 27, 2019)
Farmington Hills, MI- I found a very happy place, with a cheerful staff and regular customers, and a bowl of pecans on the sidewalk out front, when I happened upon the Sunrise Café in Farmington Hills.
They’re known for their fluffy omelets, so I decided that would be my Reporter Food breakfast. I got the chili cheese omelet which was probably the cheesiest I’ve had in my life. There was gooey American cheese inside and shredded cheese sprinkled on top, along with a slathering of chili and a side of shredded hash browns and cinnamon raisin toast.
While the food was good, basic breakfast fare, the low cost and the warm environment gave it an extra touch.
Even on a mid-morning weekday the place was packed. I took the tiny table by the door, the giant front windows, and the cash register, where so many of the friendly customers took a moment to chat as I sat, trying to eat and write.
There were a couple metal tables out front, but the weather was chilly and there was no one there. Just outside the window from where I sat was a dog bowl, under the tables, with pecans in it. This was a perplexing detail, until I saw the Sunrise Café’s tiny, unusual diner – a squirrel! I like squirrels a lot. I used to have a family of them that would come eat from my hand outside my window before my neighborhood lost a bunch of trees. So watching this adorable, hungry female with a big belly either full of babies or recently having had some, was a special treat. I’m so lucky I got the good spot, and if others go I hope they’ll consider taking that table too. Between the stream of kind strangers and the outside visitor, it truly was a delightful experience.
As far as the food, there are a number of omelet choices including the Hawaiian, the Jamaican, the Florintine, and the Kosher Salami. There are also a variety of pancakes and waffles, plus lunchtime items like salads, burgers, and sandwiches.
