Racial Slurs Painted on Madison Heights Business, Community Plans Love Rally

Madison Heights, MI – On Monday, Oct. 14 Madison Heights Police Department was notified that the business Octapharma Plasma, located at 401 E. 13 Mile had been the victim of a malicious destruction of property complaint.
The business was found to have spray paint on several areas of the outside of the building which included racial slurs and references to the “KKK.”
Reviewing CCTV footage, the incident occurred on Oct. 14 at approximately 1:08am and the suspect appears to be a white male with glasses.
Police are still investigating and we ask anyone with information on the incident or the identity of the subject, to please contact the Madison Heights Police Department at 248-585-2100.
Neighbors who want to take a stand against racism and hate are planning a “Madison Heights Neighborhood Love Rally” at Civic Park on Wednesday, Oct. 16 beginning at 4pm. 
Kymmburleigh Annette Clark, a member of the Madison Heights Beautification Project and candidate for City Council, is helping to organize the rally.  “The Madison Heights Beautification Project tried to mobilize volunteers to clean the hate speech off the Octopharma building yesterday. DPS got to it before we could even get our shoes on! Many neighbors expressed that we still give an out pouring of love and support so all of our neighbors could feel safe, so Michelle McCutchen reached out to me to suggest we organize this Rally. I think it will be fun, and important to show solidarity and that we won’t give in to fear and hate.”
Madison Heights Mayor Brian Hartwell denounced the crime at Monday’s City Council meeting, stating “Racism has no home in the City of Madison Heights. The leaders and families, 18% of whom are foreign born, condemn hateful ideology. I guarantee that law enforcement will investigate to the fullest extent of the law the racist graffiti messages placed on a local business. There are not two sides of the argument when dealing with white supremacy. It’s disgusting, it’s unwelcome, and it doesn’t represent the diverse and inclusive community that Madison Heights has grown into.”
