Reporter Food: Bagger Dave’s in Berkley
(Crystal A. Proxmire, Sept. 9, 2019)
Berkley, MI – Just a couple weeks ago, Oakland County Times featured stained glass artist Jim Fritsch who work graces the windows of the Berkley Library, and of a burger joint called Bagger Dave’s. Reading that story, which was written by Mark Stowers, gave me the hankering to try out the Berkley-born burger chain, which now has eight locations.
But Berkley was the first, and also the only one in Oakland County. Others include Birch Run, Chesterfield, and Grand Blanc.
Bagger Dave’s Burger Tavern specializes in gourmet burgers, but has other intersting items a well. My dining companion and I started with an order of No-Jive Cauliflower which is hand-breaded cauliflower deep fried and tossed in Bagger Dave’s special No-Jive BBQ sauce and pineapple tidbits. This made for bites that were savor, sweet, and tangy, My buddy ordered a custom burger, served on lettuce instead of a bun at his request.
For me it was an absolutely decadent Pizza Burger. Their burgers are a gourmet mix of sirloin, chuck, and prime rib. This particular one comes topped with artisan pepperoni, mozzarella, Parmesan, sauteed mushrooms, fresh basil, caramelized onions, and the most amazing marinara sauce. All of this is on a grilled pretzel bun that perfectly sops up that delicious tomato-based sauce. It was a little on the messy side, and challenging to photograph, but it was absolutely delicious.
There is something else about Bagger Dave’s that I like – trains! As you sit in this comfy restaurant a model train makes its way through on a raised rail overhead, delighting guests of all ages and helping to make memories.
Bagger Dave’s is located at 2972 Coolidge Hwy, Berkley, MI 48072. Check them out online at www.baggerdaves.com.
